Steven Lugerner

Instruments teach: Flute    Clarinet    Saxophone

Steven Lugerner was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area in a multicultural, artistically nurturing family. After exchanging his trumpet for a clarinet in the third grade, Lugerner soon found his niche in the woodwind world. His elementary school music studies coupled with involvement in youth orchestra allowed him to refine his studies on the clarinet and additionally inspired his interest and concentration to the oboe. Lugerner studied both the clarinet and oboe simultaneously as he performed and worked with college-level orchestras and professional pit orchestras around the San Francisco Bay Area. It was in high school that he began a dedicated study of the saxophone and an exploration of jazz and improvised music. This finally led Lugerner to The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City’s Greenwich Village where he graduated with honors in 2010. Since his relocation to New York City, Lugerner has fostered contacts, study and collaboration with such artists as: Grammy nominated pianist Fred Hersch; soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom; trumpeter Ralph Alessi & pianist Myra Melford.

As an educator, Steven Lugerner maintains an active schedule teaching private students across the Manhattan/Brooklyn areas. He has taught at the Larchmont Music Academy in Larchmont, NY in addition to the Stanford Jazz Workshop in California. Many of his students have gone onto study music at LaGuardia High School, Berklee College of Music & New York University.
